Healing Through Art: A Conversation with Dr. Vasu Tolia

What happens when a doctor trades her stethoscope for a paintbrush?

In this week’s episode of Your Radiant Spirit, I had the deep honor of interviewing Dr. Vasu Tolia—a former pediatric gastroenterologist whose second career as an abstract artist is rooted in healing, science, and service.

Dr. Tolia’s story is extraordinary: after retiring from a decades-long medical career, she began exploring art as a creative outlet. What began as curiosity soon evolved into a new calling. Today, her artwork—which she describes as “visual medicine”—has graced hospital walls, supported mental health nonprofits, and even landed on the cover of a CDC journal during the COVID-19 pandemic.

We talked about:

  • The neuroscience behind why simply viewing art can lower stress
  • Her creative process and use of color for emotional healing
  • The therapeutic power of mandalas, vision boards, and intuitive painting
  • Her free self-love guide and why she believes art should be prescribed as part of our wellness routine

Dr. Tolia’s wisdom reminds us that healing can take many forms—and that beauty, when intentionally created, can be a powerful balm for body, mind, and spirit.
