On Sunday, I attended my first Fine Art Fair in Cary, NC, at the beloved Fenton Shopping Center. It was a beautiful end-of-summer September day with lots of activity; folks stopping in, saying hi, and sharing in the beauty and joy of exploring and shopping among over 40 artists. I learned a lot about how to approach observers, how to talk about my work, and how to display it.

I had many great conversations with people; although it wasn’t a day filled with sales, it was a day spent planting seeds and a day for receiving numerous messages from God. I had one of those moments that stops you in your tracks.
A gentleman and his lovely girlfriend came by my booth. I said hello and they complimented my work, commenting on the title of one piece; ‘How Great Thou Art”. I handed him one of my business cards and started to say – “The energy behind color strongly influences my work.” He looked at it, set it down, and said, “Do you know what the meaning of blue is in the Bible?” I nodded – I do.
He went on to share about the lapis lazuli throne that God sits upon, and the blue woven into the priestly garments. I was stunned. Not only because I’ve spent years studying color from the perspective of chakras and energy, but because his words felt like a directive from God to share more deeply into the biblical meaning of color. God is efficient in His messaging. Just a few days prior, I had a conversation with my friend and spiritual teacher about the very same thing. We talked about elevating my understanding of color in its origin, the creation story, and about God as the ultimate Artist and Creator.
He lowered his sunglasses to the bridge of his nose, looked over them right at me and asked, “Are you moving away from the Hindu understanding of color toward the Christian understanding?” Once again, I nodded, stunned. I thanked him for sharing and turned to straighten something close by. When I turned again, they were gone.
I couldn’t stop thinking about it.
Of course, here I am, having just received an order of 500 new business cards with chakras on them, and yet this conversation felt like a glaring neon sign to throw them out and place a new order. This is a flashing neon sign reminder that my work isn’t just about energy, it’s not just about how color stems from the chakras – it’s about so much more than that. It’s also about scripture, faith, and how God speaks through color.
I’m a big believer that God puts us in divine time-outs – and here I sit, working from my bed, dealing with what the doctor called ‘a raging case of peroneal tendonitis’ in my left foot. God stopped me in my tracks. I’ll be wearin a boot for the next 4 – 6 weeks. I’m more certain than ever that this path I’m on is divinely guided and that God wants to be at the forefront of it – leading, guiding, and setting me firmly on it to make some changes to my work and how I talk about it.
Blue has always spoken to me of peace and clarity. Now it also carries the reminder of God’s presence, His throne, and His call.

What messages have you been getting lately? Are they neon flashing signs or subtle nudges?
